Pilotstudie naar medicijngebruik en de bloeddruk bij depressie

De BOLT-studie onderzoekt het effect van het antidepressivum Tranylcypromine (TCP) op de bloeddruk van patiënten op de polikliniek. TCP is een klassieke monoamineoxidase-remmer, een soort medicijn dat gebruikt wordt bij moeilijk behandelbare depressies. Momenteel wordt TCP echter niet veel gebruikt vanwege onder meer zorgen over de invloed op de bloeddruk, terwijl dit medicijn echter wel zinvol en veilig kan worden ingezet. Daarom is dit onderzoek van groot belang.

Voorzichtigheid
Het onderzoek richt zich vooral op wat er gebeurt met de bloeddruk van mensen die TCP langdurig gebruiken (minstens 3 maanden). Zowel de kans op tijdelijk verhoogde bloeddruk na inname van TCP (zittend/liggend), alsook de kans op een tijdelijke daling van de bloeddruk (staand) worden in dit onderzoek behandeld. Daarom zal dit onderzoek tot zinvolle klinische informatie leiden.

Inzicht
Het doel van de BOLT-studie is om beter inzicht te krijgen in de effecten van TCP op de bloeddruk en wil op bewijs gebaseerde beslissingen bevorderen. Dit doet de studie door de bloeddrukmetingen van patiënten na ≥3 maanden TCP-gebruik te vergelijken met eerdere gegevens uit hun dossiers. 

Inzet van middelen
De promovendus werkt vrijwillig aan dit onderzoek omdat hij zelf positieve ervaringen heeft met TCP en dit ook anderen gunt. Hij is zeer gemotiveerd om dit waardevol werk te verrichten. De benodigde financiering voor dit onderzoek is daarom gering en betreft uitsluitend materiaalkosten en de uren van de assistent researcher/verpleegkundige.

The BOLT study investigates the effect of the antidepressant Tranylcypromine (TCP) on the blood pressure of patients in the outpatient clinic. TCP is a classic monoamine oxidase inhibitor, a type of drug used for difficult-to-treat depressions. Currently, however, TCP is not widely used due in part to concerns about its impact on blood pressure, although this medication can still be used meaningfully and safely. Therefore, this research is of great importance.

Caution
The study primarily focuses on what happens to the blood pressure of people who use TCP for a long duration (at least 3 months). Both the chance of temporarily increased blood pressure after taking TCP (sitting/lying down) and the chance of a temporary drop in blood pressure (standing) are addressed in this research. Hence, this study will lead to meaningful clinical information.

Insight
The goal of the BOLT study is to gain better insight into the effects of TCP on blood pressure and to promote evidence-based decisions. This is done by comparing the blood pressure measurements of patients after ≥3 months of TCP use with previous data from their files.

Use of resources
The doctoral candidate works voluntarily on this research because he has had positive experiences with TCP himself and wishes the same for others. He is very motivated to perform this valuable work. Therefore, the required funding for this research is minimal and only covers material costs and the hours of the assistant researcher/nurse.
